Jennifer’s mind was racing with questions after seeing the photographs. She wasn’t sure if she should go back to the team and tell them about what she had seen. If she was sure of something, it was that she had hit a jackpot.

She decided to pay a visit to the old priest before heading back to brief the team. She questions the priest once again. Her gut feeling told her that there were some more secrets to be divulged. However, she needed a way to get the priest to answer her questions before she could continue solving this puzzle in her mind.
She asked the priest about his family. The priest stares blankly into space avoiding answering her question. She probed him further. Asking him about how he decided to become a priest. About his parents. Then she asked him if he ever got married. She was hoping that he would answer her. That was the only way she would know if the priest was being honest or not.

The priest continued to avoid her questions. He kept chanting some shlokas softly. He was praying. Jennifer could understand very little of what he was mumbling, her own malayalam being weak. She leaned in closer to enable herself to hear the priest clearly.

“My wife… she died while giving birth to my son. I couldn’t fulfil any of her dreams. I hardly earned anything from my job. She did not consider it enough money to run the house and bring up the children. She always wanted us to move to the city. She was tired of the village life. She had big dreams and aspirations for me and the children. ‘The city is where we will fulfill all our needs’ she would say every night while serving us dinner.”
“You had children? How many?” Jennifer questioned him while pretending to not be aware of it.
“Children… aah… yes… My lovely children… they always promised to never leave me….” The priest paused for a while as he felt a hot stream of tears ready to flow down his face.
“I had two children. A son and a daughter.” The priest told Jennifer.
“What happened to them?” There was still no response from the priest as Jennifer noticed his tears flow down.
“Namboori, what exactly happened on the day of the procession fourteen years ago?”
“You asked me this question a few days back. Didn’t you?”
“And you said, you fell unconscious. Did you fall into the water?”
The priest thought for a while, “I don’t remember. Many years have passed.”
“But how can one forget something this important?”
He turned his face away from Jennifer saying nothing.
“Namboothiri, did you fall into the water?”
“Eh? Aah yes. I did.”
“Are you sure?”
“Now, I remember. I fell into the water while giving the idol.”
She showed him the picture.
“Then why isn’t your upper body wet Namboothiri?”
The priest looked at the picture and then at Jennifer. His expression changed in a second from sorrow to fear. That was her cue.
“Your expressions too are betraying you Namboothiri. I know that there is more to your story. If you don’t answer me now, I’ll come back with the villagers and the authorities.”

The priest sighed heavily. He realized there was only so long he could keep all his secrets hidden within himself. He looked at Jennifer and said, “I made a mistake moley. One that has continued to haunt me day and night for all these years. That child should never have died. She didn’t deserve to.”

Jennifer sat listening to every word. Stunned. Speechless. She wanted to know more. Her heart beat began racing as she realized the truth might be revealed to her by the priest. He might know where the original idol was. He knew more than what he had been telling all the people who had visited him over the years. She held onto his hand and said, “What happened that day?”

He continued with his story, “I gave the sketch of the idol to my son. He made the fake idol. His craftsmanship was excellent. Nobody would notice the idol was fake. I had placed the fake idol in a crack I had made, in the pond’s wall. During the procession, we the child and myself went down the pond steps. The plan was to switch the idol without the child’s notice, when she took the dip. But unfortunately, she saw me doing it. I knew I would get caught if the child went back and told the villagers or even worse, if she told the royal family the truth. It would be the end for me and my children. We would lose everything.”
Jennifer felt his hands beginning to tremble. She pacified him so that he would continue. “I killed the child. That was the best thing for me to do at that time. I, with these hands, pressed her underwater until she died. What I had forgotten was… Devi’s wrath. Devi took away my children from me for what I did. She punished me. She left me to live like a vegetable and see my family rot.” he said as he broke down into a sob.
“I had planned to take the idol and the child, and my children and leave the village that night. I would sell the idol in a place where nobody would know of its powers.”
“What happened then?” questioned Jennifer, still trying hard to digest everything she had heard.
“After killing the child, I was climbing the steps of the pond, there was a flash of light and I felt a blow to my head. It was as though I was struck by lightning. Her eyes were blazing with anger. I felt it. Devi’s wrath was upon me for killing her beloved.”
“What happened to the idol after you exchanged it with the fake one?”
“I don’t know. I had kept the original idol in the crack on the wall. After I fell on the steps, I lost all consciousness. When I woke up, I got to know of the death of my daughter. My son and the royal family took care of me. The doctors told me I would not be able to walk again and that I was semi-paralyzed. My son mentioned the idol once or twice and I asked him to forget about it. After a few months, he too...”, the priest was sobbing now.

Jennifer placed her hand on his and sat with him for a while. After sometime, she got up to leave. She reached the door, turned and asked, “So you’re absolutely sure you are unaware of the whereabouts of the original idol after you stole it?”
“Believe me. I do not know anything about it.”

Jennifer left the house. She had to tell the team about it. She was slightly disturbed at leaving the priest when he was in an emotional turmoil after having revealed everything to her.
She saw Roohi playing with a few children in the village. She walked further down to the temple office, where she had requested everybody to gather so that she could update them with the news.

“Ravi, Roohi is playing with Chinnu and other kids in the ground. Shekhar has gone to bring us food. Can you send someone to bring Roohi?”
“Sure.”
“I’ll send the constable.”
“There is a problem. She might be a bit too adamant. She won’t go with strangers. The constable will have to ring me up and give her the phone. Only then will she come.”
“Haha smart kid. Will tell him to do that.”

Tara was about to get into the office when she noticed a distraught Jennifer walking towards them.

“Have some important info. Pls meet in temple office asap.”
Was Jennifer’s text to Tara and the others. Tara kept wondering as to what Jennifer could possibly have found which nobody else had.

Jennifer briefed everybody gathered in the temple office about what the priest had revealed to her. A sudden lull took over the office. Nobody said a word after Jennifer narrated the story.
The man walked up to where Roohi was.
“Roohi moley! Your mother sent me to bring you to the office.”
“Who are you?”
He bent down smiling, “Haven’t you seen me? We met in the temple.”
She ran away playing again with the kids.
“Roohi moley! Come, let us go. It is time for lunch.”
“I’ll come only if Mumma or Pappa calls me. I won’t go with strangers.”
“I’ll call up your Mumma. Wait!”
He called up and gave the phone to Roohi.
“Ok Mumma! I’m coming. Roohi was a good girl. She didn’t go with stranger uncle.”, she gave the phone to him, said bye to her friends and left.

*****

Inspector Ravi finally spoke up saying, “This means that the idol is in the village. If the boy is dead, there has got to be somebody else who knows about the idol.”

Jennifer said, “Or, the boy hid the idol. After his death, no one knows about it. One thing is sure. The idol has not left the temple premises since the child died.”

“So basically, we need to find if someone is still aware of the idol’s theft and whether he is after it. How is that possible?” Ravi looked at everyone for an answer.

“There is one way. If anyone knows about the idol, and he wants to take it out, he will be after the child.” said Sudheeran.

“But she will be under our protection.” Tara said, albeit in a worried tone.

Suddenly, Ravi’s phone rang. He excused himself.

“Yes, I just saw her playing in the village with some children. No one can take her away just like that.” said Jennifer.

Ravi walked in, his face pale. “We got our answers. Someone else reached there before the constable. Roohi is missing."

CHAPTER 10

Shekhar woke up the next morning. He looked around the room, Tara had not returned. Neither had Roohi. He stared at the ceiling for a while letting all the pain and anger he felt within subside. He had prayed for all this to be a nightmare and for it to end soon.
He didn' want to go on like this. He had to find a solution to the one problem troubling him. Finding Roohi and leaving. He got out of bed. ‘Where did I throw the blasted phone last night?’, Shekhar grumbled while beginning the hunt for his missing mobile phone. After discovering it under the coffee table in the room, he tried switching it on. ‘Must be out of battery, stupid thing.’ He continued grumbling. He had to meet Tara. He had to ask her what made her allow them to take their daughter away. Several questions kept popping up in his head while he went through his bag hunting for his phone charger.

*beep beep beep beep beep……* Shekhar’s phone kept buzzing. He looked at it. Several missed calls from Tara and a few unknown numbers along with texts.
‘CALL ME!’
‘I know you’re upset with me, but please Shekhar, call me. NOW!’
‘THIS IS FOR ROOHI DAMN IT. CALL ME.’
Tears filled his eyes as he went through all of Tara’s messages to him. ‘Call you for what Tara. FOR WHAT GOD DAMN IT! FOR WHAT!’ he cried out loud to himself. He heard his phone ring. Fighting all the anger within him, he answered the call.
‘Shekhar, I know you’re absolutely livid at me right now, but meet me at the place where we went and saw the scriptures. It is urgent!’
‘For what Tara? Oh wait, do you have something else you want to sacrifice? Maybe our marriage?’ yelled Shekhar angrily over the phone.
‘Shekhar, Roohi is with me. The idol went missing this morning. The procession never happened. Will you just meet us now?’ said Tara with a tone of urgency in her voice.'
‘WHAT? Roohi..with you? Where.. Is she okay? My Roohi…Roohi...  I’ll be there soon. Stay there Tara.’ said Shekhar as he ended the call and rushed out of the hotel room.
                  __________________________
Shekhar reached the place as mentioned by Tara during the call. He looked around for Tara and Roohi but could see no one. He tried calling Tara but couldn’t reach her.
He felt his phone vibrate, ‘The scriptures on the left. Near the statue.’ read the text.
Shekhar hurriedly moved towards the direction of the scripture.
‘Tara!’ Shekhar exclaimed
‘Shekhar.. Shekhar.. Shekhar please..Please forgive me for what happened last evening. Please Shekhar.’
‘Where’s Roohi Tara?’ Shekhar questioned her as his eyes wandered around searching for Roohi.
‘She’s safe Shekhar. She’s with the crew. I was afraid we would get caught, specially after what happened this morning… I didn’t want her to be taken away again.’ Tara’s voice softened as she turned her gaze away from Shekhar. ‘He hasn’t slept, he hasn’t eaten, he hasn’t changed his clothes.’ thought Tara to herself.
‘What happened this morning? Take me to Roohi. I want to see her.’
             ________________________
‘He left the hotel in a rush this morning, Sir. Nobody is answering the phone in the room.’
‘Hmm. Open the room. We want to search it.’
‘But Sir…’
‘OPEN THE ROOM, NOW! OR I’ll have this hotel shut down in no time’, yelled the gruff angry voice.
‘Yes Sir. Right away Sir.’ mumbled the receptionist while calling out to the bell boy.
Not having found what they were looking for, the head priest and the police leave the hotel.
'Find them. The girl's father has done this. He never wanted his daughter to be a part of this. He has done this to stop the procession from happening. Find him and find the girl.' the priest barks out orders to the troop of policemen with him. He suddenly notices one of Tara's crew member leaving the hotel.
Catching up with the crew member, the priest says, 'In a rush are we young fellow? Tell us where the Dutta's are. My dear friends here..' he signals towards the police '...will be more than obliged to take you with them if you don't tell us where they are.'
           __________________________
‘PAPA! Screamed Roohi, running towards the door and into her father’s arms.
‘Roohi! Roohi! Oh beta, papa has missed you!’
‘I missed you too Papa. I missed Mama and my dolls too!’
‘What happened this morning Tara?’ quizzed Shekhar
‘The famed idol was stolen. Nobody knows where it is or who ho took it. Nothing. Roohi was getting dressed for the procession when I heard a lot of screaming and chaos.’ said Tara describing the morning events to Shekhar.
‘Good riddance, if you ask me!’ Shekhar said hugging Roohi close to him.
‘Tara, let’s all forge..’ ‘Hold on Shekhar, I’m getting a call’
Tara returned from the call, her face pale and fear written all over it.
‘Shekhar, they’re on the hunt for us. They’re searching the room at the hotel. I asked the crew to get a few clothes for Roohi and for us. They just called to inform me that the cops are searching for us.’

‘Whatever happens, I will go to jail if I have to, but I will not let them take my daughter away again.

‘Shekhar, nobody is going to jail. We need to keep Roohi away from their eyes. Once they start doubting us, their first move will be to take Roohi away. Until we sort everything out, we’ll keep her out of all this.’
‘But how Tara? They are bound to be everywhere.’
‘There is one place they wouldn’t look. ‘
‘And that is?’
‘Inside the temple.’
Tara was dialling a number. She gave the person their whereabouts and asked the person on the other end of the line to join them immediately. The moment she finished the call, her phone began to ring. She ignored it and continued talking to Shekhar, ‘They have already searched every nook and corner of this temple. They called up the astrologers after that. The astrologers’ calculations kept changing each time they checked. Finally they decided to look outside for the idol. That was when they began to doubt us. Anyhow, they won’t look inside the temple for now.’

Jennifer walked in. Tara asked her to stay with Roohi in the temple until Jennifer got her call.
Tara’s phone was ringing continuously. Finally, she picked up. Her face became grim.
‘They want us to go to the temple office immediately.’
She looked at Roohi who was looking at everyone’s face uncomprehendingly.
‘Roohi beta, Papa and I have some work to do. So, you stay with Jennifer aunty until we are back. Ok?’
‘Who stole the idol Mumma?’
‘Mumma is going to find that. Be a good girl and we will tell you who stole it.’
‘Ok Mumma.’
*****
There were many people in the temple premises, outside the temple, around the office area, around the banyan tree, wherever they looked, the temple was swarming with people. The office door was ajar. The public demanded to know the details. Shekhar and Tara reached the office. Sudheeran opened the door and ushered them in. Inside, apart from himself, there were 3 people in police uniforms, another man who resembled Sudheeran, the head priest and his disciple.
The Police officer picked up a bag and kept it on the table. ‘Is this yours Mr. Dutta?’
‘Yes. Yes, that is mine.’
‘Then you might be able to explain this.’ He opened the bag to reveal the missing idol made of Gold.

Chapter 9
That Fateful Day
  *Few days ago*

The members of the royal family had gathered all the priests along with their astral charts. While this group of priests consulted the astral charts and worked on the calculations. The priests’ protégé’s sat in the background doing a yagya, chanting prayers and shlokas signifying the holy hour. While selecting the child destined for the honor – the Tithi (Lunar day), Nakshatra (Star constellation in which the moon is placed at that time) and the Yoga, Karana (auspiciousness) and Vara (weekday) were taken into consideration.
A few minutes later, a pandit emerged and announced to the members of the royal family and the temple authorities that they have found the child who would carry the deity’s idol.
Through the various calculations, it had come to be known that three families had come to the festival from outside the city. The destined child was already in Kerala and was staying to the east of the temple. Her star ‘Swati’ was favourable  for the child to be a part of the festivities.
The temple authorities on hearing this arranged for some men to visit every hotel, paying guest accommodation, guest houses located towards the east of the temple.

               ------

The head priest whispered something to the Duttas, and moved forward to greet the crowd. Shekhar stood transfixed.
'Welcome dear friends!', the priest's loud voice boomed. The man looked at Roohi and smiled. A bit afraid, Roohi held on to her father's hand while trying to hide behind him.

The loud voice continued, 'As we all know, the procession of Amma is being carried out after many many years. Everybody has been so co-operative in making this happen. This year, we have selected the child who will have the honor of carrying Amma.'  Turning towards the Duttas, he said, 'Roohi moley, come here.' Loud cheers and applause rang through the temple premises. Shekhar and Tara looked at each other, confused, startled and worried.

'But Sir, what about the other two families. They have daughters too. Why Roohi? No sir. I cannot and will not allow my daughter to be a part of this procession.'

'Amma Mahamaaya has chosen your daughter. Amma Mahamaaya is never wrong.'

'She..But.... No! It can't be! This can't happen.' said Shekhar, shaking his head in disapproval. He looked at Tara for some support. Tara stood quiet.
'Tara, say something! That is our child. Our Roohi whom he wants to be a part of the procession.'
'It is just a procession Shekhar. She will be carrying the deity. It won't harm her. It could be a moment for her to remember.' mumbled Tara.
'TARA! What is wrong with you?' yelled Shekhar in shock. He couldn't believe what Tara was saying.
Tara furious at having been yelled at in public, glared at Shekhar. The villagers all stared at them.
Sudheeran Varma, all this while stood quietly in the background. Watching flames flare between Shekhar and Tara.

'I am taking Roohi and leaving right away, Tara' Shekhar exclaimed during their verbal battle

Sudheeran decided it was time to step in. He addressed the crowd gathered there, 'Brothers and Sisters, this man wants to go against the wishes of Amma Mahamaaya. He wants to bring the wrath of Amma on us! He is taking his daughter away.'

The villagers who were devout worshippers of the devi, grew angry. They all surrounded Shekhar and Roohi who were trying to leave the premises. They don't let Shekhar leave. An elderly woman from the crowd steps forward, picks up Roohi and takes her to a side. The villagers lift Roohi on their shoulders proudly singing shouts of praise to the Devi.

Shekhar is held back by two large men. He turns towards Tara, 'How could you be so selfish Tara. How?'

The elderly women in the village take Roohi for the Anusthana Snan, the ritual bath before Roohi could carry the Goddess. They bathe her with turmeric water and rose petals. 'As beautiful as Amma Mahamaaya' comments an elderly lady, blessing Roohi while bathing her. They apply a paste of sandalwood on her and chant a few shlokas before completing the ritual bath.

Roohi afraid of what is going in, calms down when she sees her mother in the distance. Tara smiles feebly, unsure of what to say to her child.

Shekhar is distraught by the day's events. He doesn't want to head back to the hotel. He doesn't want to face Tara. He only wants his daughter back. He sits by the side of the road and breaks down into tears. His crying wakes up a man sleeping on the sidewalk. The man who Shekhar recalls as the 'Madman' they had encountered earlier.

The madman asks Shekhar what was wrong. Shekhar going through an emotional turmoil from within blurts out the story in between sobs. The madman smiles, puts his hand on Shekhar's shoulder and says, 'There isn't a problem in the world, which does not have a solution. Everything has a solution. It depends on how you want to find it.'

Shekhar gets agitated and walks off into the dark. 'Stupid man and his worldly nonsense.'

                                                   ---------------
Early next morning Roohi is woken up by the ringing of the temple bells and the sound of the drums. She rubs her eyes only to remember she wasn't in her hotel room. Away from her parents. Away from her dolls. She looks outside the room window and sees elephants being decked up. She hears the room door open and turns around and sees the women who bathed her bringing in flowers. They dress her up with ornaments and flowers. 'Amma Mahamaaya will be so happy' they whisper amongst each other.

Suddenly, a loud cry breaks out. The women look at each other. A disciple of the priest rushes into the room where Roohi is waiting before she can be taken for the procession.

'AMMA MAHAMAAYA HAS GONE! THE IDOL HAS BEEN STOLEN!' he shouts out to all assembled in Roohi's room before running out.
